Homemade baked beans

Here is a recipe for all you British mums - the staple diet of kids all over Britan, now our kids can have it too. I recommend the sausages from the "biologico" meat stall in Sag Fam market as the ideal accompaniment!

Ingredients:
250g "mongetes" white beans soaked overnight in plenty of water
1 tablespoon sunflower oil
1 small onion chopped
1 garlic clove crushed
1 tablespoon black treacle (I bought it in the health food shop, can't remember it's name, maybe "cebada malteada"?)
Pinch ground cinnamon
Half a teaspoon ground cumin
1 400g tin chopped tomatoes
1 teaspoon English Mustard powder
pinch ground cayenne
half a teaspoon of salt

Drain and rinse the beans. Put everything in a big pan and bring to the boil. Simmer till the beans are tender (about an hour and a half): Whole thing can be done in a nap time and it keeps well in the fridge and freezes well. Much nicer than tinned beans too!

  1. according to Answers.com black treacle is what in the US is called molasses, probably even blackstrap molasses, which is the healthiest kind. I've bought molasses here at the health food store under the name "miel de caña"
